Spain’s Iker Casillas kisses reporter girlfriend on TV after World Cup victory

Stick a fork in me, I’m done!

This is by far, the sweetest thing I have seen on television in years.

Meet Iker Casillas, the goalkeeper—and captain—for Spain’s winning World Cup team. And that’s Sara Carbonero, his girlfriend, a reporter for Spanish network Telecinco. Think he can keep it professional in a post-victory interview? — from maxgawker

Boss or slave?

Sometimes I worry about being a success in a mediocre world. ~Lily Tomlin

I feel bad right now. Just minutes ago, I called for a short meeting with our editorial assistant and graphics artist regarding the backlog in our August issue. I was told by the editor-in-chief to sit down with them and relay her disappointment.

Since I am new in the job, I felt like an infant educating my older siblings on proper decorum. It was tough, I tell you. There were times when I had to plant my hands firmly on the table I was sitting on for they were shaking uncontrollably from sheer nervousness.

I looked at their eyes and saw a misty reflection of myself back in high school. I was then the leader of our class’s group speech rehearsal. There were a few unruly classmates who needed some discipline so I rounded them up and gave them a verbal beating.  Within minutes, I saw their faces turn red, their eyes brimming with tears. Some of them had the tenacity to speak up and challenge me but I remained calm and reiterated my concerns. I was back in that moment and I felt shame. Continue reading

The Write Way

"Where one burns books, it is only a prelude; in the end one also burns people."

I’m reading a book a former editor gave me after I got promoted from a job I already quit from early this year. The book is “The City of Falling Angels” by John Berendt. I caught myself closing my eyes every five minutes as I try to read the book. I am not a book reader. I never was.

Which is quite a surprise and a shame since I insist on calling myself “a writer first, before I’m a journalist.” Reading is the writer’s exercise. It pumps up one’s irony and burns the poison of  bad TV grammar. It introduces the creative writer to style, mood and character development. On top of that, reading, a hard bound book especially, makes one look smart. It’s the eyeglasses for the hands.

But I don’t read books. I never enjoyed it. Continue reading

P-Noy’s inaugural speech: I hate those ‘wang-wangs’ on the street!

Noynoy hates cars with wang-wangs. Photo by Mark Adrian

President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III delivers a simple , direct and meaningful speech on Wednesday. Frank, fiery and at times funny, P-Noy’s (President Noynoy’s) speech resonated in me because of his abhorrence to an accepted Philippine malady on the streets: Continue reading

“Jonah Hex” is Pinoy artist Tony de Zuñiga’s creation

Jonah Hex, the latest DC comics brought to the silver screen, is bombing at the box office. Although the rough and tumble anti-hero has a pretty good following in the comic book world, the Jonah Hex film, directed by Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who?) only debuted at 8th place in the US box office.
